President's Welcome

Welcome to 2009.   Today, more than ever, all who are a part of the construction industry know that staying on top of the game is vital.  Those of us who are in the construction industry already know that this year will bring us many challenges.  As we all know, our economy is at a critical point.  As a result of the weakened economy, we are already facing job cuts and losses, very tight credit markets, frightened investors and a projected 3 to 9 percent drop in commercial construction spending.  While the numbers are not generally in our favor, there are industry predictions that most material prices will continue to drop and we may still see some growth in the education sector.

As contractors facing these economic challenges, we are fortunate to have the AGC of Greater Milwaukee as an advocate for our industry.  While we face the economic challenges that lie ahead, AGC of Greater Milwaukee continues to work aggressively to bring maximum value to its members and to ensure favorable conditions and outcomes for the construction industry.

Last year, under the leadership of CEO, Mike Fabishak and President, Craig Jorgensen, The AGC of Greater Milwaukee continued to strengthen both the association and the industry.  AGC successfully led many labor contract negotiations providing the industry with four more years of sustained workforce predictability. The association also embarked on a strategic planning effort which established the course of action for the continued growth of the association and the industry.  A critical part of the plan called for the AGC-GM to continue its leadership role in engaging association and union partners in finding fair and progressive solutions to common industry issues.

The association also continued to strengthen the role of minority businesses within the industry through another successful year of the mentor protégé program.  The continued success of this program has ensured that minority-owned businesses get the support and guidance that they need to operate strong and prosperous businesses within the construction industry.  All the while strengthening the industry, the association and its members also reached out to the community through their generous efforts to provide much-needed repairs to central city homes through their partnership with the Dominican Center.

While 2009 will prove to be more challenging than in years past, rest assured that the AGC will continue to work aggressively to meet the challenges that the industry will face and we look forward to meeting these challenges head on.
