We call these courses “the basics” in the industry. OSHA offers basic safety training through their Training Institute in Des Plaines, Illinois among other locales. The Agency has certified our safety staff to instruct these courses to the Milwaukee construction industry.

The OSHA 10-Hour course topics can change according to the audience. More pertinent topics can be substituted based on the trades participating. Our safety staff has been known to change up as the need arises. This assures contractors of getting the very best for their training dollar. Our course normally covers the following topics:

An Introduction to OSHA, the OSHA Act, and safety programming

  • Occupational health and environmental controls

  • Personal protective equipment

  • Hand and power tool safety

  • Electrical safety

  • Material handling, storage, use and disposal

  • Excavation and trenching

  • Stairways and ladders

  • Scaffolding

  • Fall protection

The course is run over four sessions at 2-1/2 hours per session. AGC retains two qualified instructors on staff to administer the class. Attendees will receive certification of completion through the OSHA Training Institute. Students must attend all sessions to qualify for the certification. CEU’s can be obtained for trades holding licenses (e.g., plumbers, electricians, etc.) in the State of Wisconsin upon request.

Sessions are held at the AGC offices at 10400 Innovation Dr., Ste. 210 in Milwaukee. Registration fees are based on affiliation and membership status. Normal fees are $150 per person with non-members at $250 per person. Corporate General Contractors can register for $110 per person. Fees include all books and written materials.

The OSHA 30-Hour course is an extension of the 10-hour in that more time is devoted to the topics. In addition to those mentioned above, a larger range of topics is offered. These include:

  • Fire protection and prevention

  • Demolition

  • Motor vehicles, rollover protection, and signage

  • Concrete and masonry

  • Welding and cutting

  • Cranes, derricks, and hoists

  • Steel erection

  • Recordkeeping

  • Confined space entry

  • Lead hazards in construction

  • Process safety management

Ultimately, the goal is to get every tradesperson certified in the OSHA 30-hour course. At a minimum, it would be a good idea to have your supervisors and foremen take the 30-hour while the balance of your workforce take the 10-hour course.

The course is run over 3 sessions at 8 hours per session and one at 6 hours. AGC retains two qualified instructors on staff to administer the class. Attendees will receive certification of completion through the OSHA Training Institute. Students must attend all sessions to qualify for the certification.
